The Other Guys

I want this movie to be funny.

The first couple seconds of the preview had me scared because Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson appeared next to Samuel L. Jackson in a cop-chasing-bad-guy scene. Samuel might have his fair share of winner rolls (i.e. Russel Franklin in Deep Blue Sea) but Dwayne is obviously naturally terrible in everything he's done. So although this is supposed to be a comedy, and it's Adam McKay (director of Step Brothers and Talladega Nights) that's directing, I'm holding a wall up just so I don't get my hopes up. You can never tell with comedies anyways.

Will Ferrell and Mark "Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch" Wahlberg play your typical clashing cops trying to prove that they are awesome and running into obstacles throughout the movie that make Will Ferrell say/do something outlandish and we all crack up. There are so many Will Farrell haters out there and I can completely understand why, but I am not one of them. he cracks me up, so that piece of the movie is promising...to me at least. Mark Wahlberg has been in some pretty bitchin movies (The Departed, Planet of the Apes) however I'd be lying if I said he was a phenomenal actor because most of his lines sound scripted. I think it's because he has a slight speech impediment. Nevertheless, comedies can get away with bad acting, and I do enjoy me some Marky Mark regardless. Sooo, I feel the vibration to say the least (had to).

Oh, and was that Michael Keaton I saw??? Yes.

  1. I'm somewhat looking forward to this movie. I'm not looking forward to the Rock potentially ruining another movie...and possibly the evening. Only thing he succeeds at as an actor is making his movie's ticket sales hit rock bottom....and I don't mean his finishing move from the wwf.

The reason there are so many Will Ferrell haters out there is, although he is hilarious, he plays the same character over and over and over. Much like how Michael Cera will never be able to play anything but the awkward quiet guy. But sometimes that's a good thing. If it ain't broke, why fix it? If you're a comedic genius, then stick to your guns.

And what's this? Michael Keaton stepping out of the shadows to grace us with his presence once more? I am pleased.

  2. I think this movie looks really funny. I'm one of the few that thinks that The Rock has embraced his shittiness and he owns it with charisma and style. He's not great, but I think he's funny and the idea of him bantering with Samuel L. is interesting to me simply because Jackson is the fucking man no matter who is around.

I only don't like Will Ferrel as a caricature. I just watched Stranger than Fiction for the first time and I loved him in it. It's Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Wedding Crashers Will Ferrel that I loathe. I'm over it. But In The Other Guys it looks like he's actually playing a human albeit an exaggerated one, and next to the exaggerated human that is Marky Mark they both might be in for some awesome performances.

I laughed a lot at the trailer which was unexpected, but I'm definitely excited to see the shit out of this when it comes out regardless of how much The Rock will be in it.

  3. See I can understand why people can't stand him. But I think I've fallen in love because Step Brothers seriously gets me in a fit of giggles. And since watching it several times the past few weeks, I've enjoyed him more. Like you said, Will, you like Ferrell as a caricature, same goes for me and several actors out there that do something out of their element... because it's different. Dane Cook SUUUUKS at stand up, but when he acts (especially in Mr. Brooks and Dan In Real Life), he's great. If Will Ferrell took a break and didn't do one after the other after the other with ridiculous comedies, everyone would like him more. Too much of a good thing isn't a good thing. I know so many people who loathe Jim Carrey but absolutely loved him in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's all about variety...imo.

  4. Jim Carrey is pretty much infallible. Eternal Sunshine is one of my favorite movies, but I've always loved him even when he was all wacky all the time. He just does it better. ANd it's when Ferrell is a caricature that I don't like him. I like when he plays someone relatable. I think this movie is going to be lots of fun.
