The Other Guys

I want this movie to be funny.

The first couple seconds of the preview had me scared because Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson appeared next to Samuel L. Jackson in a cop-chasing-bad-guy scene. Samuel might have his fair share of winner rolls (i.e. Russel Franklin in Deep Blue Sea) but Dwayne is obviously naturally terrible in everything he's done. So although this is supposed to be a comedy, and it's Adam McKay (director of Step Brothers and Talladega Nights) that's directing, I'm holding a wall up just so I don't get my hopes up. You can never tell with comedies anyways.

Will Ferrell and Mark "Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch" Wahlberg play your typical clashing cops trying to prove that they are awesome and running into obstacles throughout the movie that make Will Ferrell say/do something outlandish and we all crack up. There are so many Will Farrell haters out there and I can completely understand why, but I am not one of them. he cracks me up, so that piece of the movie is promising...to me at least. Mark Wahlberg has been in some pretty bitchin movies (The Departed, Planet of the Apes) however I'd be lying if I said he was a phenomenal actor because most of his lines sound scripted. I think it's because he has a slight speech impediment. Nevertheless, comedies can get away with bad acting, and I do enjoy me some Marky Mark regardless. Sooo, I feel the vibration to say the least (had to).

Oh, and was that Michael Keaton I saw??? Yes.

BATMAN

Who isn't a fan of the Batman movies? They have yet to steer us wrong. Well, something extra sexy is headed our way with the third installment of the new Batman flicks. Mr. Johnny Depp is said to play The Riddler in "Batman 3" (no official title yet). Of course, that is unofficial right now..yet I believe every ounce of it.

I would prefer if they didn't do the whole Riddler concept (imo). Yes he's a nifty character/villain, but to me, he's too much like The Joker...only worse. Give us variety. But, I can deal. I won't doubt that it won't be awes-sauce so do it up Nolan's. I would love to see Harley Quinn somewhere in the storyline and I have a feeling she'll pop up. I just hate that there isn't "definite's" anywhere.

Apparently this is supposed to be the final chapter of the Batman franchises and that makes me upset beyond belief. What am I supposed to do with my afternoons once this is all over? Pick up a hobby I suppose...

I'm so geeked to hear more about this!

Independence Day 2...even 3 ??

So last night I had a dream that I was eating grilled cheese sammies while watching Independence Day with a bunch of D&D Champions (hahah..i don't over analyze my dreams, and neither should you). It was almost like I was actually watching the movie because I feel like it ran the actual run-time of it. When I woke up, I needed to go on IMDB just to check on it (just like the cops in home alone). To my surprise, I found a news article not only on hollywood.com but cinemablend.com as well, talking about squeals to the 306 mil grossing 1996 flick.

According to random sources, there is going to be two squeals filming back to back...and Will Smith is locked down. They're rumored to possibly start filming in 2011.

Unfortunately, that's all the "news" on this for now. I'm definitely going to follow up on it.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter

This is a major reason why I'm moving back to FL (kidding.....but not really)...

As we all know.. Universal Studios is being awesomely bitchin and opening up a world dedicated to Harry Potter. This 20-acre, 200 million dollar addition was set to open in Spring of 2010 but has officially set their date to open June 18th (two days before summer...nice work guys).

The signature ride of the park, called "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey," will take riders through scenes from the books/movies. Visitors will also be able to step into the town of Hogsmeade, complete with train station and train, all standing in the shadow of Hogwarts Castle (I'm getting hard).

Stores will include: Zonko's, Honeydukes Sweet Shop, and a wand shop. Traditional British foods and Butterbeer (Harry's favorite drink – said to taste a lot like a blend of cream "pop" and butterscotch) at the Three Broomsticks Restaurant & Hogshead Pub will be served. Oh! And simulated Triwizard Tournaments will go on!

How righteous?! I'm so excited!

P.S. It's said that J.K. Rowling is appearing at the park mid summer! Keep your eyes peeeeled!

The Hobbit

Well, well, well. Look who decided to come out of the woodwork and grace us with it's presence. Since the launch of the first big news regarding The Hobbit, in 2008, there have been a lot of back and fourth thoughts with when they're actually going to start filming. According to BBC News, filming should begin in July. Casting is going to held in L.A., NY, and London... I better get over there!

Peter Jackson (director of the LOTR's) has decided to let Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (director of Pan's Labyrinth, and the Hellboy's) take the reigns and give the trilogy's two-part prequel, The Hobbit, a fresh look. Nevertheless, Jackson is said to be producing and working on the script.

The Weta Workshop president said his team has started designing the landscape and characters in The Hobbit. 'We're just patiently waiting for it to begin. It's been in early development for a while. I'm sure it will get going some time soon,' explains art designer and Oscar winner for his work on Lord of the Rings, Richard Taylor.

It's said to resemble (in appearance) The Rings which is something I find, and I'm sure most LOTR fans out there, to be extremely important. I can only hope that it will NOT be in 3D but it's said the Weta team will take advantage of technological advancements since the first trilogy.

Pirates 4

First off...yikes.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of the Pirates movies, is set to release May 20, 2011. The movie, directed by Rob Marshall, is set to be based around the Fountain of Youth which to me seems like it could be a decent concept...I just don't have much faith in it. Since the story line of Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom's characters are done and over with, they will not be involved in this picture. However, they've decided to do something absolutely ridiculous (in my opinion) and bring in the ever so annoying Penelope Cruz. I have yet to be wow'd by anything that woman has done so I will not be too eager to see her in this film. Not to mention that Rob Marshall and Penelope Cruz worked on Nine together...and we all know that was a flop.

I am indifferent about this fourth installment because I loved the first (obviously..it was the best), was bored with the second, and yet I got more entertained by the third...so there was a little see-sawing going on and now I'm not sure what to expect. We'll obviously be entertained by Johnny Depp regardless of the direction the movie goes in so it won't be a complete disappointment if it turns out being major suckage.

At least we have over a year to wait for it. They don't start filming til this Summer (in Hawaii) so they have plenty of time to make it good. Take your time guys, we don't want another Dead Man's Chest.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

This fictional story, by Brian Selznick, is a kids novel that is going to be made into a film. It's said to be inspired by formative French filmmaker Georges Méliès, a man who developed many of cinema's earliest special effects, camera tricks, and more.

What's interesting about this is the fact that Martin Scorsese is making it. We're used to seeing him make badass movies like Goodfellas, Casino, and Shutter Island. Now we're going to see him in a new light; making more of a kids film. I'm fascinated in seeing what happens. The story alone is interesting to me. It's a Caldecotte Medal Winner. The Caldecotte Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published that year. This particular book is 533 pages long with 284 picture pages in between. That's quite the kids book I'd say.

So far, so good! This seems like a winner! But..here's the downside...

Apparently, It's been revealed that Sacha Baron Cohen is part of the cast. I am not a fan of him at all. There are so many other great actors out there that can fit whatever roll they're casting him in. Or even, a no-namer would work out. Just anyone but him...

Overall, I'm excited in the story and the fact it's going to be a Scorsese film. I look forward to hearing more about it.

Introducing...The Hotshot

Alright, this post isn't about film. I found this little diddy while scopin the internet at 7am.

A company in Switzerland decided to start making condoms to suit 12-14year old boys. The condoms are called "Hotshots" (hah nice) and were marketed after the Swiss government thought that tween boys weren't being safe when they had intercourse. The Hotshot has been designed to fit a 12-14 year old boys penis, so it is smaller than your average condom. They're priced around $7/6pk. If I ever saw a 12 year old buy condoms, I'd vomit on them and their parents.

"They have more of a tendency not to protect themselves,"  claims a study, adding that because of their young age, they also do not know much about sexuality (oh REALLY?!). "They do not understand the consequences of what they are doing. The results of this study suggest that early prevention makes sense." So what makes them want to have sex in the first place? Use your hand champs, it costs a lot less.
I'm pretty boggled by this, but making or not making these condoms isn't going to stop them from having sex. But who are they having sex with? 12-14 year old girls? Does anyone even know what sex is yet?! Pretty soon having sex at 10 is going to be the new Tiger Beat Magazine.

I'm not against this product, because they're making them for an apparent reason, I'm against sex at such a young age.

Corey Haim

Well, our awesome Corey duo (Corey Feldmen and Corey Haim) of the 80's might have died two decades ago, but half of the pair actually died this morning. Corey Haim, 38, died this morning at 3am of an apparent drug overdose. Haim continued working on many projects even after his fame of The Lost Boys and Licensed to Drive...although none them were worth watching to be honest. It's known that he was working on several projects right now as well.

I hate when they call these deaths "Accidental drug overdose". The word 'accidental' should not take place because then it makes it sound like a complete mistake that they were doing drugs in the first place. They knew what they were doing, they knew the consequences, and that's that.

Men In Black III?

Rumor has it that Columbia Pictures is officially having conversations regarding their third entry into Men In Black. Apparently they've shown strong interest in both Sacha Baron Cohen and Jemaine Clement. What an awkward pair. Clement is rumored to play a character named "Yaz" (a new agent who possibly controls birth??)...neither are locked yet. Etan Cohen, writer for Tropic Thunder and Idiocracy, allegedly wrote the screenplay. Shooting was originally scheduled to begin this spring.

Men In Black in 1997 grossed close to $600mil worldwide and it's squeal in 2002 took in $440mil.... which was so unmemorable to me. All I can remember from the second one is that my sister Shelly, cousin Alex, and I were in Atlanta, Michigan, sun-burnt, and we ate Reese's Pieces while repeatedly saying "El-i-ot. El-i-ot." like E.T. I believe the movie was lame.

Sometimes when a movie waits too long for a sequel, or a threequel in this case, it's just so incredibly uninteresting.

We'll see if any of this is actually true soon.

The Academy Award Winners

I don't know about you but I'm pretty satisfied with the outcome of last's nights Academy Awards. Not only was the hand out of Oscars relatively acceptable, but the whole show in general was entertaining. I approve of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin as hosts; hilarious. Thank you NPH for popping your head in and opening the show with your always appreciated song and dance! I'm going to touch base on a few main categories last night so please visit IMDB.com for the full listing of Oscar winners.

Lead Actress: Sandra Bullock
I've never not liked this women. People always gave her crap for the movies she was in but ever since Love Potion No. 9, I always dug her. She never stuck out in anyone's mind as an impeccable actress but she definitely will now after her stellar performance in The Blindside (she absolutely made that movie worth watching btw).

Lead Actor: Jeff Bridges
I look forward to seeing Crazy heart (never got around to seeing it). From the few clips I saw last night of it, it looks great. I'm pleased to see Jeff Bridges win this category. If Clooney would have won..."rigged" would have been my first thought.

Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique
All I can say is that she won it over Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick...two women who didn't blow me away at all to be honest. It's not that I don't like them, because I do, I just didn't think their performances were all that special in Up In the Air. I wish I had an opinion over Maggie Gyllenhaal's performance but if she was nominated, she must have done something right I guess. As far as Penelope Cruz goes... zzzzzzz.... Mo'Nique for Precious was the best bet.

Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz
Outstanding performance from him in Inglorious Bastards. I would have not be opposed to seeing Stanley Tucci for The Lovely Bones win. The character he played in that movie was not anything he's ever done before. It was sincerely impressive.

Director: Kathryn Bigelow
Winning for The Hurt Locker. First woman to win this award. Congrats!

Best Picture: The Hurt Locker
My money was riding on either: The Blindside, Avatar, The Hurt Locker, or Precious. It would have been so awesome to see District 9 win but I knew it wasn't going to unfortunately.

Those are the main categories that I was looking forward to. I think all the winners were pretty much well deserved.

Did anyone else notice that Farrah Fawcett wasn't mentioned in the montage of fallen stars??? But ok, let's mention Micheal Jackson onnneee moreee timmme. Rude. Rude. Rude.

The John Hughes tribute was great. I got chills from it actually. That man was brilliant in my eyes. Tear-jerking moment when his Brat Pack and other stars came out of the woodwork to say a little something about their time working with him. Loved it!

...oh and Macaulay Culkin is still 9 years old.

The Razzies and Alice

The Golden Raspberry Awards (aka The Razzies) were held yesterday, March 6th, in LA. The Razzies are an annual award ceremony held one day before the Oscars which was formed 29 years ago.

The "Winners" of the worst of the worst are...

Worst Picture-- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ... will not argue that!

Worst Director-- Michael Bay for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen .... ditto

Worst Actor-- The Jonas Brothers for Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience

Worst Actress-- Sandra Bullock for All About Steve ... watch this video ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adYced7GB8k (thanks to Will for the link)

Worst Supporting Actor-- Billy Ray Cyrus for Hanna Montana: The Movie

Worst Supporting Actress-- Sienna Miller for G.I. Joe

Worst Screen Couple-- Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper for All About Steve

Worst Remake Rip-Off Sequal-- Land of the Lost

Worst Pictures of the Dacade-- Battlefield Earth

Worst Actor of the Decade-- Eddie Murphy ... mad laughs!

Worst Acress of tve Decade-- Paris Hilton ... this goes without saying for now and forever.

I absolutely love these awards. What I love most is that some people can be totally cool with it and say "Yes, that movie was an abortion" and accept their "award" Thank you J.B. Wilson for your creation of The Razzies.

In other entertainment news:
Alice In Wonderland grossed $116 million this weekend ($210mil worldwide). That's the biggest first quarter income since 300 in 2006 (taking in $70mil). I want to be extremely impressed but it's hard to since ticket prices are what they are. Not to mention seeing it in 3D/I-MAX...that's an extra $3/person depending on where you go. I am not an Alice fan since I never saw the Disney version (nope, never) but I'm always excited for a new Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration.

Spirit Award Winners

First want to start out with saying that Alice In Wonderland is dominating the box office right now with a $45mil intake on Friday alone and an estimated $115-$120 gross over the weekend. Insane. Thanks 3D and ticket sales starting at $100.

back to the main topic...

^^ Go to that site, you'll get the list for all the winners.

The Spirit Awards are awards for independent filmmakers.

So excited to see that (500) Days Of Summer took home an award for Best Screenplay. (500) Days was unique and fun. I loved how they bounced around the days so we could see the emotional roller coaster that Tom (Joseph Gorden-Levitt) went through during these 500 days.

An Education took home Best Foreign. It was amazing and with the amount of foreign films out there, it beat a tough battle and it was wellllll deserved (although out of the foreign films in this category I only saw An Education...I'm sure the others were great to be nominated).

Precious took 5 awards. All the ones they were nominated for. I'm not surprised but, geez. I thought there were better films. Better made (and I don't mean the chips) in general. But that's just myyyy opinion. Good work to everyone who worked on it and congratulations!

A Serious Man won Best Cinematography. Won't argue with that. Although I wasn't blown away with the plot, it was beautifully shot. The lighting and camera angles were spot on, as most Cohen Bro's movies are. Props to them for that.

For more on the awards won, go to the site posted at the top.

Oscars start at 8pm on ABC March 7th.

Oscars

The Oscars are on Sunday (march 7th) and I am super excited! As far as the Best Motion Picture category goes, I have seen all of them so I can have a say in what I believe should win. The nominees for this specific category are:
Avatar
The Blindside
District 9
An Education
The hurt Locker
Inglorious Bastards
Precious
A Serious Man
Up
Up In the Air

This is the first time they have had this many noms (10) in a category for The Academy Awards and I think it's fantastic. The pressure of winning is higher than ever so the accomplishment of receiving this award is going to be more rewarding. Now, obviously, all these movies are special in one way or another otherwise they would not have locked down a spot. I have a little something to say about all of them (mostly opinion and not much about the plot of the film) and who I believe should win.

Avatar: Unless you're living under a rock, you know the impact that this movie has had in not just the film world, but in the world in general. Although the story might be a little obvious, it is still fun to follow and you grow a relationship with the characters which is very important. The thing that has everyone talking, are the mind blowing effects! James Cameron knows how to rock the big screen and create entertainment that changes the way people look at film. Cameron has set the bar for special effects! Thanks to the help of Weta (New Zealand based company specializing in visual effects, makeup effects, props, costumes, etc), new lengths in CG (computer generation) were reached. This film was overall beautiful.

The Blindside: I'd be lying if I said I loved this movie. I didn't. Yes, it was inspirational and the story was great but I sort of feel like these inspirational sports movies are said and done. They're all based on a true story/true events and they're all supposed to move us in one way or another...get it...got it. What made me enjoy this movie would have to be Sandra Bullock. She was great and I always wanted to see her on screen. Quinton Aaron, who plays Micheal Oher, was borrrinnngggg. I know he was supposed to play a shy, sweet guy but it was almost like he was bad doing nothing. Even when he stood there, he looked so unnatural. Acting to me is KEY and when someone is bleh, it can void out the greatness that the film may have. It was a good movie, but I wouldn't like to see it win.

District 9: My Winner. I thought this film was brilliant and I'll be sad and dismayed if they walk away with nothing. The acting, the plot, the effects...all phenomenal! Once again Weta makes an appearance and shows us that technology is exceeding our expectations. What is highly unfortunate is the lack of acknowledgment this film has received. I hardly know anyone who has seen it but for those that have, they've had nothing but great things to say about it as well.

An Education: I went into this movie without an ounce of background. Didn't see a single preview and didn't read one review. But I did hear from a good source that the movie was great...so I checked it out. This British made film was fantastic. The acting was memorable and it makes me wonder why we even bother having "actors" like Channing Tatum and Megan Fox (ick). I thought it was beautifully shot and it definitely gives us an idea into the life of girls and women living in the 1960's. Although special and visual effects are amazing to me (since I work in the field) and could possibly take the cake in this category, I'd really enjoy seeing this movie win.

The hurt Locker: Definitely entertaining. Most movies that deal with warfare are automatically something that catches most people's eye...mine included. It takes us to a place where people of non military status can sneak a peak into an idea of what goes on outside the comforts of our cozy homes. This movie had me on edge for most of it and I love when movies are capable of doing that. Side Note Opinion: I love the foley of military equipment on soldiers (don't know what I mean? ask me personally) . I enjoyed it and I support those that serve our country but I would much rather see another picture take this award.

Precious: The hype for this movie was incredible. Someone, somewhere was constantly talking about it. It was definitely inspirational and obviously moving but I guess I could say that I'm somewhat over movies that are "moving". I understand the life of this young girl was rough and tough and she put up with an assortment of bullshit that could make any old Joe crack, but I would never watch it again...and that is something I want in a movie. I understand it was supposed to bring uncomfortable moments to the audience but that uncomfortably stuck with me through most of the film. I NEEDED to take a shower after it which isn't something I want after I watch a movie. I want to say "That was great, let's watch it again!" but I couldn't with this.

Up: This movie was adorable! I left smiling and bubbly and impressed with the animation. If you thought Toy Story looked real, check out the detail in Up! Not only was the animation superb, but the plot was precious, up-lifting, inspiring. If this wins, my reaction will be "Awww :D" because who doesn't get giddy when you think of that little boy, his pet bird Kevin, and that grumpy old man who was so in love with his wife? I'd be satisfied if this won.

Up In the Air: "George Clooney does it again!" ...Yea...he plays the same character in every movie. Even if he plays a dad, a spy, a business man, I see zero difference. Ok, I have nothing against Clooney but to me, he's nothing that special. This flick was cool for what it was: A man who travels a lot for his job but I was partially bored throughout it and hardly wow'd by any aspect of it at all. I don't get what people saw that I didn't. To me, it was a movie, and nothing more.

Inglorious Bastards: This was the last movie I saw out of the entire bunch. I'm surprised because I was excited to see Quentin Tarantino's new film when it was out in theaters....never made it there. But anyways, I dug it. I thought it was funny, and clever and it definitely has a chance at winning. The fans this movie gathered is huge, as all Tarantino's films do. If you've seen his other flicks, you'll feel right at home the second the opening credits roll and music ques. Despite some lagged scenes and a touch too long, I was entertained, amused, and could see myself watching this again.

A Serious Man: I can understand and see why a lot of people may follow and love this movie but to me, it wasn't great. I may be one of the very few but I definitely felt like the film was lacking. I will never watch this again and that is absolutely something I look for in a movie: watch-on-repeat worthy. It just didn't grab me like I want movies to. I did really enjoy the score and most of the music through it: mysterious and depressing is what I got out of most of it. I laughed, I felt sad, I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. I don't think it should win for Best Picture, and I don't believe it will.

My opinions..please check out all of them if you're interested and go in with an open mind so you can decide for yourself how you feel about them!
