Well, well, well. Look who decided to come out of the woodwork and grace us with it's presence. Since the launch of the first big news regarding The Hobbit, in 2008, there have been a lot of back and fourth thoughts with when they're actually going to start filming. According to BBC News, filming should begin in July. Casting is going to held in L.A., NY, and London... I better get over there!
Peter Jackson (director of the LOTR's) has decided to let Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (director of Pan's Labyrinth, and the Hellboy's) take the reigns and give the trilogy's two-part prequel, The Hobbit, a fresh look. Nevertheless, Jackson is said to be producing and working on the script.
The Weta Workshop president said his team has started designing the landscape and characters in The Hobbit. 'We're just patiently waiting for it to begin. It's been in early development for a while. I'm sure it will get going some time soon,' explains art designer and Oscar winner for his work on Lord of the Rings, Richard Taylor.
It's said to resemble (in appearance) The Rings which is something I find, and I'm sure most LOTR fans out there, to be extremely important. I can only hope that it will NOT be in 3D but it's said the Weta team will take advantage of technological advancements since the first trilogy.

The production is actually starting to get asked about whether or not they are going to use 3D for the Hobbit and Guillermo still says it's up in the air. I can see del Toro and Jackson having enough pull over the suits to say "Hey we don't want to shoot this in 3D" but they haven't quite made the decision for themselves yet either. Chances are though if they do shoot it in 3D it'll be the same way Avatar used the technology to add depth instead of try to stab you in the face with sharp sticks. If they shoot for 2D and then get pressured to convert the footage to 3D, I will not see the movie.
ReplyDeleteI'm mostly interested in what they've added to make The Hobbit necessitate two separate films. It's by a long shot the shortest book and it's an easier read so I'm a little boggled (DemoMan, hollah) as to why this one warranted a full on split rather than just the standard 3h10m theatrical release with uber long director's cut DVDs later. Whatever happens though, it's guaranteed to be amazing with the two of them behind the wheel.
I'm still not letting myself get my hopes up that it's even going to happen though. They seem to keep hitting road blocks and the news after multiple law suits seems foggy to me. I can't imagine why they'd pull the wool over our eyes and keep us thinking it's going to get made if the project has gone away, but until I start seeing contracts signed and casting announcements I'm not sold that this is even going to happen.

ReplyDeleteMy boggle???
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. There has been wayyy too much back and forth bullshit going on that I too have yet to get excited about it.
(I also hate that I haven't been extremely excited about a movie coming out since The Dark Knight...seriously bothers me..just a side note)
With 3D..I understand it can add a certain depth to it, but I will always see 3D as being sort of.. well.. cheesy. I loved it in Avatar, don't get me wrong, but I just don't see 3D fitting in a movie like The hobbit..it's just a weird concept to me.
Mellow greetings sir, what's your boggle?
ReplyDeleteI remember first hearing about this project a couple years back and my heart fluttered. I've read the Hobbit 5 times give or take and it's probably one of my favorite pieces of literature. It is a bit of an easier read, once you get all the names down (memorizing all 13 dwarves was no simple task). But that's what I like about it. It's a fun read to just pick up and immerse yourself into. I loved the detail and color Tolkien used to bring this story to life. And the 1977 animated movie has been a personal favorite since I was little. Not to mention my first AIM screenname was Orcristcleaver32.
It is the shortest Rings book, but I'm excited to see that it's a 2 parter. They left out so much out of the other movies, like Tom Bombadil in the Fellowship, so it's really bitchen that they're trying to squeeze every bit in that they can. I definitely don't mind.
It pains me to keep seeing this project pushed back so many times and put on the back burner. It really makes me question whether or not it will ever make it to the big screen anytime soon. Too many times have I gotten amped up for this movie then read a blog or update online about legal issues or obstacles getting in the way of production. So for now, I won't get too giddy, but I anxiously await it's arrival.
And as far as 3D goes, I reallllly hope they keep it 2D. I enjoyed the subtle 3D look they added to Avatar, but this isn't Avatar. This is the fucking Hobbit.
