This fictional story, by Brian Selznick, is a kids novel that is going to be made into a film. It's said to be inspired by formative French filmmaker Georges Méliès, a man who developed many of cinema's earliest special effects, camera tricks, and more.
What's interesting about this is the fact that Martin Scorsese is making it. We're used to seeing him make badass movies like Goodfellas, Casino, and Shutter Island. Now we're going to see him in a new light; making more of a kids film. I'm fascinated in seeing what happens. The story alone is interesting to me. It's a Caldecotte Medal Winner. The Caldecotte Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published that year. This particular book is 533 pages long with 284 picture pages in between. That's quite the kids book I'd say.
So far, so good! This seems like a winner! But..here's the downside...
Apparently, It's been revealed that Sacha Baron Cohen is part of the cast. I am not a fan of him at all. There are so many other great actors out there that can fit whatever roll they're casting him in. Or even, a no-namer would work out. Just anyone but him...
Overall, I'm excited in the story and the fact it's going to be a Scorsese film. I look forward to hearing more about it.

I've been excited for this since a month ago when I first wrote about it on CB (http://cinemablend.com/new/What-Are-You-Up-To-Scorsese-16973.html shameless self promotion). I think the story sounds pretty cool, I love kids movies, and Scorsese is defined in dictionaries as 'the mutha fuckin shit'. So really there's nothing to not be pumped about.
ReplyDeleteIf he wants Sacha Baron Cohen (can we just start calling him Sacha Cohen, already? His three names makes it sound like he's going to assassinate a president) he probably has good reason. Plus, I didn't mind him in Sweeney Todd so his capacity to do good things outside of his Bruno/Borat comfort zone is there.
I am totally going to gallop into the kids section at Borders before this movie comes out and snatch that book up. I might even wait nearby until a little kid picks it up so I can walk up all tough and take it from him by force. Then I'll hand him a Manga and tell him to go tell his mom she's a beotch. Then I'll put a disguise on so he won't recognize me while I'm leaving the store. Nooj. Best plan ever.
Urban Dictionary definition of Martin Scorsese: an undisputed genius. Truer words were never spoken. Definitely been a fan of him since I can remember. I'm really jazzed to see in what direction he takes this children's movie.
ReplyDeleteI too am a bit uneasy about the Sacha bit since he's pretty much known for lack luster, awkward humor. You'd get the same entertainment value as Borat or Bruno from an abortion clinic. But like Will said, Martin wouldn't grab just any random scrub actor for no reason. In Scorsese we trust.
I really thought about picking up shutter island in book form before seeing the movie, but I never got around doing it. But the fact that this book has 284 pictures might be the selling point for me (i'm a 12 year old boy).
Thanks for the comments guys. True, Scorsese can do no wrong in my eyes..and in most people's eyes as well. The man knows how to make a definite winner so I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I don't completely loath Sacha in this flick (although I do every other time I see him. mega yuck!).
ReplyDeleteI too definitely want to read the book before it's out. I'm getting pretty ambitious LOL
READ SHUTTER ISLAND! It's a really awesome and simple book and really hard to put down. Plus, it actually seems like Scorsese read it before making the movie.
