Spirit Award Winners

First want to start out with saying that Alice In Wonderland is dominating the box office right now with a $45mil intake on Friday alone and an estimated $115-$120 gross over the weekend. Insane. Thanks 3D and ticket sales starting at $100.

The Spirit Awards are awards for independent filmmakers.

So excited to see that (500) Days Of Summer took home an award for Best Screenplay. (500) Days was unique and fun. I loved how they bounced around the days so we could see the emotional roller coaster that Tom (Joseph Gorden-Levitt) went through during these 500 days.

An Education took home Best Foreign. It was amazing and with the amount of foreign films out there, it beat a tough battle and it was wellllll deserved (although out of the foreign films in this category I only saw An Education...I'm sure the others were great to be nominated).

Precious took 5 awards. All the ones they were nominated for. I'm not surprised but, geez. I thought there were better films. Better made (and I don't mean the chips) in general. But that's just myyyy opinion. Good work to everyone who worked on it and congratulations!

A Serious Man won Best Cinematography. Won't argue with that. Although I wasn't blown away with the plot, it was beautifully shot. The lighting and camera angles were spot on, as most Cohen Bro's movies are. Props to them for that.

For more on the awards won, go to the site posted at the top.

Oscars start at 8pm on ABC March 7th.

  1. I always thought the Spirit awards were kind of bullshit. Honoring independent film is an awesome thing, but saying that the Coen brothers are on the same level as Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) is a little silly. All of these movies are nominated for Oscars too and all of them had names behind them that would easily help the producers land financing. Precious had No'Nique and Mariah Carey, the Coen brothers have several Oscars that say "We make good movies", even An Education and (500) Days of Summer had actors kicking around who financiers would recognize as money makers. I think honoring independent film making is great, but I wouldn't call any of these truly independent. Just my opinion, great blog.

  2. I agree...completely. I was a little shocked to see that either of those were considered independent. To me, Independent means a lot of no-namers. I know that's not necessarily true, but that's how I see it.

    Thanks for the comment!
